Metropolitan Police take on extreme running challenge for charity

On 13 March 2012 eight members of the Metropolitan Police took on a 40 mile extreme run through central London for learning disability charity Mencap.
The run is part of Metropolitan Police Officer Daniel Steggles' training programme ahead of taking part in the Marathon des Sables in the Sahara desert next month, as well as a fundraiser for Mencap. Daniel was joined by fellow officers from the Metropolitan Police Service including members of the Territorial Support Group (TSG) who were involved in the policing of last years disorder in London. The team started at the TSG base in East London at 6am and then ran through some of the capital's most iconic locations including New Scotland Yard, Downing Street and the Police Memorial at Horseguards Parade.
At each leg of the journey the team of eight was joined by senior officers from around the capital including Commander Michael Johnson, Commander Bob Broadhurst, Chief Superintendent Andy McKechnie and Chief Superintendent Mark Bird, head of the TSG. The run coincided with the 25th anniversary of the TSG and formed part of the year's celebrations, with an impressive BBQ at the end of the challenge.
Daniel Steggles, Police Constable, comments: 'It was an extreme running route round London that had never been attempted before, it was a fantastic challenge and I'm delighted so many colleagues and supporters joined us along the way. It was a great way to fundraise for Mencap and celebrate the TSG's 25th anniversary.'
