Essex officer £10,000 charity pledge
Thursday, 17 February, 2011
A kind hearted Essex Police officer has pledged to raise £10,000 for Help for Heroes; a cause very dear to his heart after his son was injured while on tour in Afghanistan. Pc Terry Hobbs, who works in operations planning at Boreham, has so far raised £1,610.
His son Aaron, 20, was involved in an IED blast in September 2010, which claimed the lives of his best friend and his sergeant.
Aaron, who lives in Southend, received serious injuries including a fractured spine, pelvis and dislocated hip as well as various serious lacerations and burns. He is now recovering, splitting his time between Headley Court rehabilitation hospital in Surrey, his home in Southend, and his dad Terry's home in Wickford.
Terry said: "Aaron joined the Army four years ago when he left school. He'd always wanted to be in the Army. My dad was a Normandy veteran and he idolised him."
Aaron is now registered as disabled and will be medically discharged from the Army later this year.
Terry is planning to organise a number of events to help with his fundraising effort, including a dinner dance on Friday, November 11, at the Westcliff Hotel in Southend.
There will be a live band as well as a three course meal, all for £20, with £5 going to Help for Heroes. Terry also plans to organise a raffle with all proceeds going to the charity.
