Commendation for Airwave

Airwave has been awarded a Chief Constable's Commendation following its successful implementation on the London Underground.

Peter Neyroud, Chief Executive of the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA), made the award at a reception attended by Minister of State for policing, security and crime, Vernon Coaker.

It recognises the delivery of Airwave to all 125 below ground London Underground stations. As a result, British Transport Police (BTP), the Metropolitan Police Services (MPS) and City of London Police are all able to use the same radios underground, improving the safety of the travelling public and the emergency and public safety services.

The rollout was managed by the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) and was completed within budget ahead of schedule.

Chief Constable Peter Neyroud said: "The Commendation recognises the good work undertaken to deliver Airwave on the London Underground some five months ahead of schedule, and within budget. It was a tremendous achievement."

Richard Bobbett, Chief Executive of Airwave, said: "I was delighted to receive the award on behalf of everyone who worked so hard to deliver Airwave to the London Underground. It was a complex project but its successful conclusion means the police can communicate seamlessly above and below ground, a move which is ultimately good for public safety."

The award was received by Mr Bobbett and Airwave Project Manager Ray Mason who led the delivery programme.
