Growing overseas demand for UK officers

Friday, 13 February, 2009

It is becoming ever more popular to move abroad - a recent survey reveals that more than one in three people would consider moving to work abroad or elsewhere in the UK1 and according to latest figures, an estimated 340,000 people left the UK last year in search of a fresh start abroad. The reasons for moving can vary greatly but career-related moves are commonplace.

British police officers are being called upon to take up a new job overseas as part of a drive to address skills and labour shortages in Australia and New Zealand.

Particularly so in Victoria and Queensland, increasing numbers of police officers are being lured by the promise of job security and a new life patrolling the streets Down Under. This ongoing recruitment drive is expected to boost police ranks with an extra 400 officers over the next few years.*

Barry Koolen, Managing Director - UK & Ireland, for relocation specialist Crown
Relocations, explains: "There are a great number of sectors in Australia and New Zealand in which job opportunities exist for British immigrants. Police officers are in real demand and migration measures have been put in place to address the lack of trained workers in this area."

The Australian government is adding an extra 31,000 skilled migrant places a year to its skilled migration program to assist employers struggling with recruitment.

The incentives of good career prospects and high wages go some way to explaining why there are now 3.247 million British-born people living abroad, with Australasia emerging as one of the most popular emigrant destinations in recent years.

Due to the demand, those police officers considering emigrating in search of better prospects could find themselves better placed in the immigration application process. Getting through the application procedure is only the first step in the process however. Making the transition from life in the UK to life abroad involves a lot of time and forward planning.

Barry added:"Crown understands that moving overseas can be both a stressful and emotional time and we believe preparation is the key to a successful relocation. Moving your possessions, finding a home, schools and adjusting to a new environment are important factors in any move and this is where Crown's expert knowledge and experience comes into play."
