New advert calls for help tackling terrorism

Wednesday, 13 February, 2008

Greater Manchester Police Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) is today (Wednesday 13 February) launching a campaign to encourage people to store and use the Anti-Terrorist Hotline.

An innovative advert will be showing on Channel M as well as on the GMP Internet. It reminds people of the existence of the confidential hotline number 0800 789321 and asks them to 'store it, in case'.

The advert will be on Channel M* for a month from today. And this week it is also on the big screen at the approach to Piccadilly train station, in Manchester city centre. It can be seen by logging onto www.gmp.police.uk and on YouTube.

Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Porter, head of the GMP CTU, said: "The help and support of people in Greater Manchester is essential to tackling the terrorist threat. It is not just important for people to know the number exists; we want them to store it in case they need to use it.

"If they have any concerns about suspicious activity in their community they can use the hotline to let us know. Any information people can give is important and may be the final piece of a jigsaw we are working on. We can assess the information and it could make a real difference.

"The campaign is part of ongoing work to promote the hotline number and is not linked to any current threat."

All calls to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline are treated in confidence and information is given to specialist officers who can assess it and decide the appropriate action to take. Anyone with information can call the hotline on 0800 789321.

GMP CTU was established in April 2007 as one of four in a national infrastructure to tackle the current terrorist threat. It has already had a significant impact and its work has led to five people serving prison sentences and many others have been disrupted from their activities.
