University donation benefits bobbies on bikes

Two new bikes donated by Kingston University are helping police officers get out and about in their neighbourhoods. The University has donated £1,000 to buy two top-of-the-range cycles as well as helmets, lights and accessories. The new sets of wheels allow officers to cover their patch more quickly than they would on foot.

Sergeant Matt Smith, of Kingston Borough Police, said that the public often found officers on cycles more approachable than those in cars. "Using the bikes allows my officers to get closer to the community and increases their visibility in the neighbourhood," he said. "They will also help officers to access narrow alleyways which they couldn't do in a patrol car. We are very grateful to Kingston University for their donation."

Glyn Jones, Head of Student Affairs, said Kingston University had a very good relationship with police officers in Kingston. "The police provide safety advice to students at our Freshers' Fair and throughout the year. Sponsoring these two new bikes is our way of giving something back to the community and saying thank-you for all the support we receive."
